A Beginner’s Guide to Trading Online

Trading is a way to make money by buying and selling securities (such as stocks, bonds, and commodities) with the goal of making a profit. If the market prices fall below your purchase price, you have made a profit; if they rise above your purchase price, you have made a loss.

This classic guide teaches you the basics of stock selection and market analysis. Once you understand these concepts, you can begin to trade on your own.

To trade stocks, you'll need a brokerage account. Many brokerages offer commission-free trades, so be sure to check their terms before signing up. Once you have an account, find a company whose stock is trading at a price that's attractive to you.

Then prepared for the market by studying its financial statements and reading news articles about it. When the right time comes, place a buy order for the stock and wait for it to hit your price. If the stock goes down below your price, sell it and make a profit.

To trade futures, you'll need to learn more about options. An option gives the buyer the right but not the obligation to buy or sell a security at a set price in the future. You can buy options to sell stocks or futures, and vice versa. To make money with options trading, study charts carefully and enter orders at just the right moment.
