Unlike type 1 diabetes that produces little or no insulin, type 2 diabetes are still able to produce insulin, but not control very well. The human body needs glucose for energy.
Glucose comes from the food we eat, especially food which is high in carbohydrates. These foods provide fuel for the body in the form of glucose or sugar.
For the body to use the glucose it needs insulin which is a hormone produced by the pancreas. For people with diabetes type 2, the pancreas is unable to produce this insulin or the body does not properly use the insulin it makes.
When this happens glucose or sugar in the blood increases instead of being used for energy. If your diabetes can not be controlled by diet, pills, or diabetes medications may be prescribed.
Some pills work with the food you eat and the insulin in your own body to control your blood sugar. While others help your body produce more insulin.
